The new coronavirus does not discriminate, but its consequences do. Brazil welcomes hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants. Most come from Venezuela, searching for a safe life. This is a population especially vulnerable to the consequences of COVID-19. For this reason, UNHCR Brazil joined Operation Acolhida, authorities, civil society, and partners to support the construction of a field hospital in Boa Vista, Roraima.
The field hospital has a care wing dedicated to refugees, migrants and residents of local communities victims of COVID-19. Built with the support of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and partners, the hospital is part of the so-called Protection and Care Area (APC) – one of the fronts of the federal, state and municipal health response to the new coronavirus pandemic. This initiative expands the number of intensive care hospital beds available in the region.
Watch the video below to see the participation of the UN Refugee Agency in each of the stages of the project.
